Mayor Honey wants a clean Manila inside out

MANILA Mayor Honey Lacuna is off to a good start.

Her first speech to address her co-workers at the City Hall during the first flag raising ceremony that she and Vice Mayor Yul Servo attended on July 5 was marked by a call for overall cleanliness within the city of Manila.

This is to bolster her issuance of Executive Order Number 6, declaring every Friday of the week as “Cleanup Day” in the city of Manila.

The EO states that all departments, offices and bureaus under the Manila local government are enjoined to tidy up their areas of jurisdiction and their immediate vicinities as well.

Mayor Honey, a lady mayor, a mother and a doctor, said she believes that “cleanliness is next to Godliness” and that the appearance of one’s workplace and surroundings is a reflection of the kind of character one has.

In the case of public servants, the work area’s conditions, to her, are highly reflective of the kind of service that an office or official offers and a clean one conveys the message of a clean and orderly governance.

Before the issuance of the said order, Mayor Honey, on her first day in office, went around the various offices, departments and bureaus in City Hall, accompanied by her chief of staff Joshue Santiago, city engineer Armand Andres, department of public services chief Kenneth Amurao and city electrician Randy Sadac, among others.

The first woman mayor of Manila took the opportunity to see with her own two eyes the condition of the offices within City Hall and to also have some chitchat with the employees who were both surprised and glad to see her visiting them.

In doing so, Mayor Honey expressly made it known that she wants every nook and cranny of the Manila City Hall spic and span and requested the employees to keep their workplace and the vicinities falling under their jurisdiction, to include the corridors as well, clean at all times.

Mind you, the order for cleanliness goes beyond City Hall, as it also covers all its other offices located away from City Hall such as city hospitals, markets and health centers.

Even the heads of barangays and police stations are also called upon to keep their surroundings clean and free from any eyesores at all times.

These include not only uncollected trash but also illegally-parked vehicles, both private and public utility and even vendors who cross the line of up to where they are actually allowed to peddle their wares.

Mayor Honey’s order also covers obstructions that serve as hindrance to free flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

On the first Friday following the issuance of the said EO, everybody complied and the employees are even happy to do so.

The good mayor, for her part, did not only thank all the heads and personnel of various departments, bureaus and offices in City Hall for observing and leading the implementation of EO No. 6 in the entire city.

More than this, she expressed pride that the first ‘Cleanup Day’ in Manila was a huge success and that everybody cooperated and supported it.

“All departments, bureaus and offices did their cleanups in their respective workplaces, including hospitals, markets and police stations. I am confident they will keep up the good work,” Mayor Honey had said.

By the way, belated happy birthday to my trusted friend of long standing, Engineer and District 5 Zone Chairman, Mark Delfin. If you need a construction company that will not overcharge you and has real concern for his clients and projects, he is the go-to-guy.

Special greetings too, to Johnny Mendoza, the very kind and accommodating owner of Asian Taste Seafood Restaurant located at the Seascape Village in Pasay City, along with the equally nice manager Joseph Yu, dining manager Arnel Tan and captain waiter Rommel Damo.

Believe it or not, they visit tables just to check on how the food and service are, as well as get comments to further improve their dishes and the way they serve their customers.
