LEON Barretto paid tribute to his childhood nanny, fondly called Manang Ninay, who is retiring after more than two decades of service to their family.
“Had to say goodbye to my yaya of 22 years. Truly heartbreaking but happy knowing you finally get to rest and enjoy life back in Cebu,” Leon wrote in an Instagram post. “You have sacrificed so much for our family, especially for me, from the moment you chose to take care of me.”
Leon recalled how his nanny stood by him throughout his childhood and teenage years: from kindergarten to college.
“Would you believe that there was a time I was smaller than you?” he added. “You’ve guided me on the right path and taught me so many things, including how to speak Tagalog. You even reviewed me almost every night for my Filipino subjects.”
He also thanked her for her patience, saying, “I’m sorry for being such a kulit and pasaway kid growing up. But because of your discipline, I’ve become a better person.”
Leon shared fond memories of being picked up from school and being carried out of bed so he could eat. “Most of all, thank you for never leaving mom, for helping her take care of us, protect us, and love us like your own,” he said. “Love you so much, Manang. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement.”
Actress Marjorie Barretto also shared her gratitude: “I would not have survived all those years without Manang Ninay. We love you!”
