Villanueva warns vs against perceived bias in special Senate session to try VP

SENATOR Joel Villanueva cautioned against calls for a special Senate session to deliberate on the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, stressing that it could be seen as biased if the request comes from those who initiated the complaint.

Speaking at a Jesus Is Lord prayer event in Pasay City on Saturday, Villanueva emphasized that the decision to hold a special session should not be influenced by the petitioners themselves.

“It doesn’t look good if those who filed the impeachment complaint are also the ones pushing for a special session. That might create a perception of bias,” he said.

His statement came after Manila Representative Joel Chua and ACT Teachers party-list Representative France Castro—both signatories to the impeachment complaint—suggested that the Senate President could call for a special session to address the issue.

While Villanueva clarified that he would not personally request a special session, he said he would comply if President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. or a significant number of senators supported the move.

Despite the Senate adjourning without taking action on the complaint, Villanueva assured the public that senators are prepared to fulfill their role as jurors in the impeachment trial.
