KABILANG si Pangulong Duterte sa listahan ng mga pinuno sa mundo na tinawag na “press freedom predators” ng isang international media watchdog.
Ayon sa Reporters Without Borders o Reporters sans frontières (RSF), dahil sa sabwatan sa lahat ng sangay ng pamahalaan ay nakapaglunsad ang administrasyong Duterte ng “total war” laban sa mga mamamahayag.
“Judges who don’t toe the line are pushed aside. Congress tamely endorses all the president’s decisions. Backed by most of the private sector, Duterte easily imposes his line on media outlets owned by businessmen that support him,” ayon sa RSF.
Ilan pa umano sa mga “bala” ni Duterte laban sa mga tumutuligsa sa kanya ay ang pagsasampa ng mga kaso, pagtatanggal ng prangkisa, “pagbili” sa mga miyembro ng media, at paggamit ng troll para mang-harass.
Kabilang sa mga nabiktima umano ng pamahalaan ang ABS-CBN, Rappler at Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Itinanggi naman ni presidential spokesperson Harry Roque ang paratang ng media watchdog.
“Freedom of the press is alive and well in the Philippines. Wala po ni isang kasong libelo na isinampa ang Presidente, wala pong kahit sinong mamamahayag na napakulong ang Presidente,” aniya.
Kasama ni Duterte sa listahan ng “press freedom predators” sina Xi Jinping ng China, Vladimir Putin ng Russia, Jair Bolsonaro ng Brazil at Mohamed Bin Salman ng Saudi Arabia.
Pasok din sa listahan sina Carrie Lam ng Hong Kong at Sheikh Hasina ng Bangladesh.
“There are now 37 leaders from around the world in RSF’s predators of press freedom gallery and no one could say this list is exhaustive,” ani RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire.
“Each of these predators has their own style. Some impose a reign of terror by issuing irrational and paranoid orders. Others adopt a carefully constructed strategy based on draconian laws. A major challenge now is for these predators to pay the highest possible price for their oppressive behavior. We must not let their methods become the new normal,” dagdag niya. –WC
