NILAGDAAN na ni Pangulong Duterte ang batas na nagbibigay kapangyarihan sa may 2,000 bombero na armasan para higit na mapatupad ang public safety.
Inaprubahan ni Duterte ang Republic Act 11589 o ang Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act na naglalayon na makapagbigay ng mas maayos na fire protection program sa pamamagitan ng modernong kagamitan at specialized training.
“I am therefore confident that the passage of the modernization act will help boost the morale, efficiency, responsiveness, and professionalism of the BFP in realizing their mandate,” ayon kay Duterte sa isinagawang signing ceremony sa Malacañang.
Ipinagtangol din nito ang pagpayag niya na armasan ang mga bombero dahil ito anya ang magbibigay dagdag proteksyon sa mga pulis para proteksyunan ang mga government properties.
“In the mind of some, why would you give a gun to a firefighter when they are only putting out fire? You know, the organization itself and the firefighters, they are exposed to a fraught of so many dangers,” anya.
“They would only be given a unit, whose function would really be just to ward off threats and destruction of government properties,” dagdag pa nito.
Ayon sa bagong batas, 14 bombero sa kara fire regional office at city station ang papayagan na makapagdala ng baril bilang miyembro ng security and protection unit.
Tanging 2,282 sa kabuuang 32,800 BFP lang anya ang aarmasan, base sa batas.
