A FILIPINO student earned the rare distinction of graduating magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard University, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the United States.
Eion Nikolai Chua, 22, completed a double degree in Chemistry and Economics, along with a master’s degree in Chemistry and Chemical Biology, during his four-year stay at Harvard.
He was among the thousands who attended the university’s 374th Commencement Exercises on May 29, where 9,434 degrees were conferred, including 2,014 from Harvard College.
Chua was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States, which recognizes exceptional achievement in the liberal arts and sciences.
Before entering Harvard in 2021, Chua studied at the International School Manila and MGC New Life Christian Academy, both in Taguig.
“Very happy. But I guess I sort of medyo expected na po because I was very involved in like taking a lot of graduate courses, doing research,” he said. “They really see who takes like depth of courses appropriate for someone who they think will perform well.”
Chua plans to return briefly to the Philippines to rest and explore opportunities in the local chemistry industry.
“In the very short term, I’m hoping to go back home and rest and also maybe like explore a little bit and see what the chemistry industry is like in the Philippines,” he said.
In the long term, he hopes to start a business that will help others, particularly by using chemistry to find solutions to local challenges.
“Maybe do a little chemistry start-up or chemistry business to help other people,” he said, citing the example of converting agricultural waste into bio-based chemicals for farmers.
Chua said he dedicates his academic success to his parents, mentors, and teachers who supported him throughout his journey.
