SPEAKER Martin Romualdez expressed confidence on Friday that the administration-backed Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial candidates will secure significant support in the upcoming May 12 elections.
Romualdez, who leads the 306-member House of Representatives, made the statement as he welcomed President Bongbong Marcos Jr. and the Alyansa candidates to Tacloban City and Leyte for a campaign event.
He highlighted Leyte as a stronghold of the Marcos and Romualdez families, pointing to the province’s voting record in the 2022 presidential election, where Marcos Jr. received 641,065 votes compared to his closest rival’s 99,207.
According to Romualdez, Leyte, Tacloban, and Eastern Visayas are expected to back candidates aligned with the administration’s agenda of economic development and regional progress. He noted that the region’s political ties to Marcos Jr. date back to his mother, former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, a native of Leyte and former representative of the province’s first congressional district.
Leyte, with 1.4 million registered voters, has historically been a key political base for the Marcoses and Romualdezes.
The campaign event in Tacloban marked the ninth stop for the Alyansa slate as it works to consolidate support in major regions ahead of the elections.
The Alyansa ticket includes former Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay, Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, Imee Marcos, Francis “Tol” Tolentino, and former Senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Manny Pacquiao, and Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.
Also in the lineup are ACT-CIS Representative and former Social Welfare Secretary Erwin Tulfo, and Deputy Speaker Camille Villar.
