Opposition candidates Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino assured the public that they would act as fair and impartial judges in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte should they secure Senate seats in the 2025 midterm elections.
“As senator-judges, we will have to look at the evidence. I’m a lawyer, and we must ensure fairness and justice in the process,” Pangilinan said during a press conference in Iloilo City.
He warned that any deviation from fairness would undermine the Senate’s integrity.
Aquino echoed Pangilinan’s stance, emphasizing that personal bias would not influence their judgment.
“We will fulfill our duty based on evidence and the rule of law. If we win, we must resist pressure and not compromise our votes,” he stated.
The impeachment trial is expected to begin in July, and both candidates affirmed their commitment to upholding justice if elected.
Their statement came in response to remarks by Senate bet Raul Lambino, an ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who claimed the Senate would not grant Duterte a fair trial due to political motivations.
