THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) will enforce a nationwide liquor ban starting May 11, a day before the 2025 midterm and first Bangsamoro elections.
Under Comelec Resolution No. 10999, the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited during this period.
Exceptions are granted to hotels and establishments accredited by the Department of Tourism that cater primarily to foreign tourists.
“Liquor drinkers, take a break. It’s better to be sober when casting your vote,” Comelec Chair George Garcia said in an interview Saturday.
“We don’t want anyone showing up at polling precincts smelling of alcohol. Let’s all focus on electing our leaders.”
In addition to the liquor ban, the Comelec reminded the public that all forms of campaigning are strictly prohibited on May 11 and 12. This includes the removal or distribution of campaign materials, and even wearing campaign-related apparel on election day.
