THE coronavirus disease pandemic that led us to health and economic crises has exposed who are competent and incompetent government officials from barangay to municipal or city, all the way to the provincial and regional to national levels.
Like the fire that separates impurities from gold, the pandemic is searing our institutions, bureaucracies, systems, and processes that are supposed to serve and protect us the people.
Combining my experience as a private citizen, as a policy person dealing with government and private businesses, and as a media and spokesperson from the labor sector, I saw courageous and brave men and women – individually or in groups, in private and public capacities – stood up to the challenge and gave their all. Some innovated, coped, and transcended.
Some of these courageous souls survived, some didn’t. They fell. Others were maimed, some were bruised though they quietly continue fighting.
Some stayed safe and hid somewhere and waited for things to die down. Some were genuinely scared and shrank and had never been the same.
Government institutions were tested too. The pandemic exposed the capacity and powers of these institutions including those who are sitting in charge and those who work in the organization.
Dito ko na-realize na napaka-importante talaga ng pagpili ng ating mga lider lalo na sa namumuno sa gobyerno. Nagiging malakas at epektibo o inutil at lumpo ang ating mga government institutions depende sa taong nakaupo.
Kaya napakatagal ng tatlong taon o anim na taon sa mga opisyal na incompetent. Habang napakaikli ng panahon kung epektibo at magaling ang ating mga lider.
Kahit kasi mahina, limited o maliit na institution at ahensya ng gobyerno pero kung competent ang lider at mga nakaupo rito, napapaandar at napapagana ng mga ito ang makina na magsisilbi at magseserbisyo sa atin.
Sana ay gawing panukat o timbangan natin lahat na mga mamamayang Pilipino ang karanasan natin ngayong tayo ay nasa krisis dala ng pandemya. Hangad ko na mas nakararami ang ating mapipili na magaling, mahusay, at epektibong lider na mamumuno at magsisilbi sa atin.
