Our judges need protection too

THE recent earthquake in the country has shaken not only ordinary citizens but even the toughest, among them the justices of the land.

Recently, the city government of Manila has given hard hats to justices that they can use in case of an earthquake and has vowed to provide more assistance if and when needed, as long as such is possible.

Earlier on, associate justices Carlito Calpatura and Maria Elisa Sempio Diy, both of the Court of Appeals, sought assistance from Mayor Honey Lacuna, through city administrator Bernie Ang, regarding protection gear that they can use in the wake of the earthquakes that hit the country recently.

Ang said that in response and on orders of the mayor, the city government gave the justices at least 100 pieces of hard hats that were turned over to their disaster risk reduction management office.

Presiding Justice Remedios A. Salazar-Fernando, Associate Justice Jhosep Lopez, Associate Justice Apolinario Bruselas, Jr., Associate Justice Fernand Lampas-Peralta, Associate Justice Ramon A. Cruz, Associate Justice Maria Elisa Sempio Diy, Associate Justice Louie Acosta, Associate Justice Ronaldo Roberto Martin and Associate Justice Carlito B. Calpatura personally received the hard hats and expressed gratitude to Lacuna, Vice Mayor Yul Servo-Nieto and Ang for showing concern for the welfare of the justices.

It was learned that the mayor herself, along with Servo and Ang, delivered the hard hats to the office of the Court of Appeals.

The lady mayor assured the justices that her administration is more than willing to provide all kinds of assistance possible for the protection of the justices and their employees.
Falling under the territorial jurisdiction of Manila, both the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals also deserve the attention of the city and its top officials show it.

Real property owners in the city of Manila are being encouraged by Mayor Honey Lacuna to to pay their taxes early and online, as the implementation of the online system of payment s now a notch better with the issuance of e-statement of account (SOA) and e-receipt.

With this in place, there are now two ways to pay the real property tax (RPT), which can either still be done manually or through online, via the Go Manila app.

Under the online system, one can just use a cellphone, Ipad, or computer to apply for RPT and using the app, can just click away until payment is done and a corresponding receipt had been issued.

With regard to manual payment, Lacuna cited the hassle of having to go all the way to the Manila City Hall and once there, inquiring where to proceed to pay their RPT and then having to line up to get their SOA and then again, to pay.

These long lines, she said, is what the city government wants to avoid which is why taxpayers are highly encouraged to avail of the online system of payment.

This time around, there will be an e-SOA and an e-receipt that will be given the taxpayers online.

After entering the Go Manila app, one has to go to RPT payment and enter his tax declaration number and property identification number.

From there, the SOA will appear and then, one can choose whether to pay quarterly or yearly.

When this is done, the taxpayer may choose the mode of payment either through money transfer, bank or GCash after which he will be issued an e-OR or e-receipt.

Here’s another good news. The lady mayor announced that those who will pay their RPT before December 10 will be able to avail of a 20 percent discount while those who will pay from December 11 to 29 will get 15 percent discount.

Those who will choose to pay in January will still get a ten percent discount.

Joke (from Mylah Torres of Bulacan)

Titser: Ano ang hugis ng mundo?

Juan: Kuwadrado po, Ma’am!

Titser: Hindi!
