Mass held at Tacloban Airport in honor of Pope Francis

TACLOBAN CITY – Speaker Martin Romualdez on Saturday led Waraynons, Church leaders, and public officials in a solemn Mass commemorating the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ historic visit to Tacloban following the devastation of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

The Holy Mass, held at the New Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport where the late Pontiff once stood under stormy skies, served as a tribute to his compassion and solidarity as he is laid to rest today at the Vatican.

Romualdez emphasized that Pope Francis offered the people of Eastern Visayas not merely hope, but the strength to rebuild from unimaginable loss.

“Pope Francis stood with us not only as a spiritual leader, but as a father to the suffering. His presence comforted our grief and rekindled our spirit of resilience,” Romualdez said.

The tribute, titled Paghinumdom: A Tribute of Gratitude, featured videos reflecting Pope Francis’ life and mission, accompanied by worship music from the I Love Tacloban Singers.

The Mass was officiated by Msgr. Ramon Stephen Aguilos and several priests.

Romualdez recalled the powerful image of the Pope in a yellow raincoat, a lasting symbol of solidarity.

“Though his visit was brief, its impact endures,” Romualdez said.

“We carry his message of love, humility, and hope in our hearts to this day.”
