Legislator pushes social media regulation to combat fake news

A House leader on Tuesday pushed the legislation to regulate social media to curb fake news and harmful content while safeguarding free speech.

During a hearing led by the House Committees on Public Order and Safety, Information and Communications Technology, and Public Information, Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales Jr. emphasized the need for improved transparency and accountability mechanisms for social media platforms.

“To effectively promote digital safety, a multi-stakeholder approach is essential,” said Gonzales, sponsor of House Resolution No. 286 that led to the hearing regarding fake news.

“Social media companies, cybersecurity experts, and legal professionals must collaborate to craft effective legislation that ensures a safer digital landscape while preserving democratic values.”

Adopted by the House in December 2024, the resolution proposes enhanced content moderation, stronger reporting systems, and safeguards against algorithm misuse. It also prioritizes digital literacy to help Filipinos discern credible information.

Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers proposed a regulatory framework similar to the ethical standards upheld by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) for broadcast media.

Meanwhile, Laguna Rep. Dan Fernandez highlighted the dangers of disinformation, particularly its impact on public health during the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise of cybercrimes, and the psychological toll of cyberbullying on minors.
