THE brutal attack on Tiktok, an aspin (Asong Pinoy) from Negros Occidental that was found bleeding from multiple arrow wounds, has sparked outrage across the country.
Senator Grace Poe, deeply disturbed by the act, is now urging the swift passage of a stronger Animal Welfare Act before the 19th Congress adjourns.
“We are enraged by the barbaric and inhumane treatment of Tiktok,” Poe said in a statement on Thursday, as she called on the continued crackdown on who abused the dog.
“This kind of cruelty has no place in a civilized society. If we don’t act now, what will stop these perpetrators from harming humans next?”
Poe called on local authorities and animal welfare groups to find those responsible and ensure they face legal consequences.
“Tiktok’s case should not be forgotten. Those who harmed him must be punished under the law,” she emphasized.
The senator also stressed that this disturbing incident highlights the urgency of amending the Animal Welfare Act to empower barangays in responding to animal cruelty and neglect. She hopes Congress will prioritize the measure when sessions resume on June 2.
In October 2023, Poe pushed for a separate fund in the 2025 budget for spaying, neutering, anti-rabies shots, and animal shelters, ensuring long-term protection for animals like Tiktok.
