PINALAGAN ng Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) ang desisyon ng Department of Agriculture (DA) na mag-angkat ng 22,000 metric tons ng sibuyas sa harap ng hindi bumababang presyo nito sa merkado.
Sinabi ni SINAG Executive Secretary Jayson Cainglet na noong Oktubre 2022, isinulong nila ang pag-aangkat ng sibuyas, bagamat hindi ito pinakinggan ng DA.
“We have long asked the DA to import as early as October given the shortage of white onions at 7.5 million kilos and avoid traders using the shortage card to jack up the retail prices of onions,” sabi ni Cainglet.
Nauna nang inihayag ni Agriculture Deputy Spokesperson Rex Estoperez na napagkasunduan ang pag-aangkat ng sibuyas dahil hindi bumababa ang presyo ng farmgate ng sibuyas.
Aniya, hindi na napapanahon ang pag-angkat dahil nagsisimula na ang anihan ng sibuyas.
“Instead of contemplating on new onion imports, that will only result in depressed farmgate prices of onions, with the onset of the harvest season, the DA should rather concentrate on huge gap between farmgate prices and retail prices of onions,” sabi ni Cainglet.
Idinagdag ni Cainglet na hindi rin matitiyak na bababa ang presyo ng sibuyas kung magsasagawa bg importasyon ng sibuyas.
“Another round of onion imports will not guarantee reduced retail prices if the DA will remain useless in addressing the gap between the farmgate and retail prices,” dagdag ni Cainglet.
