Uwan weakens into severe tropical storm, may re-enter PAR Wednesday – Pagasa

TYPHOON Uwan (Fung-wong) has weakened into a severe tropical storm as it moves north-northwestward outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Tuesday.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said Uwan’s center was estimated at 370 kilometers west-northwest of Calayan, Cagayan, moving at 10 kilometers per hour (kph).

It is now packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 remains in effect over Batanes and the western portion of Ilocos Norte, where gale-force winds may bring minor to moderate impacts. TCWS No. 1 is still raised over parts of Cagayan, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan, which may experience minimal to minor damage due to strong winds.

The weather bureau said Uwan will continue to bring occasional gusts over most of Luzon, the Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Northern Samar. By Wednesday, gusty conditions are expected over the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, and parts of Central Luzon, persisting over Batanes and the Babuyan Islands by Thursday.

Pagasa said Ugasawan is expected to move north before turning northeast from Tuesday night until Thursday and may re-enter PAR by Wednesday evening as it approaches southwestern Taiwan, where it could make landfall.
