THE approaching Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong) could reach the same intensity as Super Typhoon Pepito, which ravaged parts of Luzon last year, the state weather bureau said Friday.
In a press briefing, Pagasa Administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando said Uwan’s projected path and strength closely resemble those of Pepito, warning that widespread flooding and landslides are expected once the cyclone nears land.
“If we look at it, their tracks are almost similar. It was also a super typhoon, and nearly the same areas may be affected,” Servando said in Filipino.
He recalled that during Pepito’s onslaught in November last year, Quezon, Aurora, and Catanduanes were among the hardest hit provinces — areas that may again experience severe weather under Uwan’s path.
Servando added that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 5, the highest warning level, could be raised in some locations depending on Uwan’s final track and intensification.
Super Typhoon Pepito affected over 850,000 residents across Luzon and caused significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture.
Pagasa continues to monitor Uwan closely as it moves toward the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
