A new low-pressure area (LPA) was sighted off Mindanao on Saturday morning and could develop into a tropical cyclone within 24 to 48 hours, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda said the LPA was located approximately 1,575 kilometers west of Mindanao.
While current forecasts suggest it will not enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), it may graze the western boundary near Palawan.
The LPA’s trough could bring scattered rain showers over the Zamboanga Peninsula and the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
Meanwhile, Pagasa also reported the dissipation of the LPA that was previously Tropical Depression Querubin.
As of 2 a.m. Saturday, Querubin no longer poses any impact to the country, having weakened into an LPA last Wednesday after a brief stint as a tropical depression.
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather advisories and prepare for possible rainfall associated with the new LPA.
