PANGASINAN Rep. Mark Cojuangco is facing public criticism after his comments on social media about residents affected by Typhoon Tino’s floods in Cebu and other areas.
The controversy began when a TikTok video, reposted on X (formerly Twitter) on November 8, gained widespread attention. The video included a statement reading, “PANGARAP KO LANG TALAGA IS MAMATAY NA LAHAT NG CORRUPT SA PILIPINAS!”
Cojuangco commented on the post on November 9, questioning why homes were built in flood-prone areas.
“Bakit kasi sa flood plain gumawa ng tirahan? Takaw sakuna,” he said.
He added, “Di mo ba napansin na yung diversion channel ay mas mataas kay sa yung lupa ng tirahan nila? Bakit doon? Ito na yung consequence ng choice na yun.” His post has since amassed over 2.3 million views.
Netizens condemned the congressman’s remarks, criticizing him for appearing to blame the victims rather than addressing the lack of safe, affordable housing and government policies that allow construction in hazardous areas. Some commenters urged him to focus on solutions to prevent future tragedies rather than public commentary.
The incident highlights the sensitivity of disaster response discussions online, particularly during active calamities, and has fueled broader conversations about government accountability and community protection in flood-prone areas.
