OLYMPIC double gold medalist Carlos Edriel “Caloy” Yulo and tennis standout Alexandra “Alex” Eala headline the list of contenders for the 2025 Philippine Sportswriters Association Athlete of the Year award.
Yulo capped his banner year by winning gold in the vault at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, in addition to his historic two-gold haul at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He also collected medals in Asian competitions.
Eala, meanwhile, made history as the first Filipina to break into the WTA Top 50 following her semifinal run at the Miami Open. She also won her first WTA 125 title and helped deliver the Philippines’ first women’s tennis gold medal in 26 years at the Southeast Asian Games.
Other nominees include golfer Miguel Tabuena, world champion pool player Chezka Centeno, and swimmer Kayla Sanchez.
The PSA Awards Night will be held on February 2 at the Diamond Hotel, where special citations and lifetime achievement awards will also be given.
