‘Quezon’ producer defends portrayal amid criticism from MLQ descendant

THE production team behind Quezon, a historical drama starring Jericho Rosales, has released a statement in response to criticisms from Ricky Avanceña, a descendant of former President Manuel L. Quezon.

Avanceña earlier confronted director Jerrold Tarog and the film’s cast during a post-screening forum, questioning what he described as the film’s “political satire” that he said desecrates his family’s legacy.

TBA Studios, the company behind the film, stressed that Quezon is rooted in verified historical records and the late president’s own writings.

“While we respect and understand his sentiments, we wish to reiterate that the film is grounded in verified historical accounts, including President Quezon’s own autobiography and other reputable sources,” TBA Studios said in a statement.

The studio also noted that while the film includes fictional elements for thematic storytelling, “the facts and details presented in the film are easily verifiable through public records, online research, or library resources.”

TBA added that it had released a Study Guide and Companion Book listing the references used in the film to encourage deeper study and discussion.

“We encourage everyone to watch the movie so they can form their own opinions and join the ongoing conversation about the film, our history, and how it continues to resonate today,” the statement read.

“We hope that Quezon can continue to inspire meaningful dialogue, reflection, and a deeper appreciation of our nation’s past,” it added.
