Man trapped in sewer while looking for coins in Cebu

A 39-YEAR-old man was rescued after he got trapped inside a sewer in Cebu City where he reportedly entered to look for coins.

Rescuers had to forcibly remove the heavy metal cover of the manhole to pull the man out. He was immediately brought to the hospital for treatment.

A concerned resident said he heard banging sounds and a voice coming from the sewer at the corner of Colon and P. Lopez sts. in Brgy. Kalubihan, prompting him to call the authorities.

According to the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the man had entered a drainage tunnel through a ground opening near a university in the downtown area and crawled for about 500 meters in search of loose change.

However, the man began to feel dizzy and short of breath while inside the tunnel. When he attempted to exit, he found himself trapped beneath a steel cover that could not be pushed open from the inside, prompting him to call for help.

The city’s Department of Social Welfare and Services has been tapped to conduct an assessment and provide assistance to the man.
