A 19-YEAR-old girl died after she and her parents were attacked by thousands of bees while clearing weeds on their farm in Brgy. Fatima, New Bataan, Davao de Oro.
The victim, identified as Monica Cañas, was with her parents when the swarm attacked.
Her father, Emmanuel, said that he was stung first before hearing his wife and daughter screaming.
Despite his injuries, he rushed to help. “I thought I was the only one,” he said in Bisaya.
He recalled carrying Monica as they tried to escape. She was able to run a short distance before collapsing near a creek.
The site was far from the town center, and it took hours before neighbors were able to reach them and bring them to the hospital. Monica was declared dead on arrival.
Her parents survived the attack but sustained multiple stings to the face and body, leaving them nearly unrecognizable. They remain under medical observation.
