DOH warns residents near Mt. Kanlaon of health risks from ashfall

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday issued a health warning for residents near Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island, urging them to take precautions against respiratory illnesses and other health risks due to volcanic ashfall.

The DOH noted that volcanic ash can irritate the respiratory tract, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Prolonged exposure to ash can also cause eye irritation, redness, itching, and skin rashes. Additionally, the ashfall increases the risk of waterborne diseases.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa advised residents to heed the guidance of local authorities and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). He also emphasized the risk of lahar, should pyroclastic density currents come into contact with water.

“If in an area affected by ashfall, stay indoors. Close all doors and windows. Use N95 masks if available. Any medical mask or even folded cloth may help if N95 masks are not on hand,” Herbosa said. He also recommended wearing eye protection like goggles and avoiding contaminated water.

Herbosa urged those experiencing breathing or eye problems to seek immediate medical attention. Health facilities near Mt. Kanlaon were advised to prioritize pregnant women in their third trimester.
