Davao City condemns Vice Ganda over dig at Duterte

THE Davao City Council has passed a resolution condemning comedian Vice Ganda for his recent remarks targeting former president Rodrigo Duterte during a concert.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, was approved on Tuesday, August 12, following calls from Duterte supporters to declare the TV host persona non grata in the city.

Dayanghirang said the council agreed that a formal condemnation was sufficient and would serve the same purpose as a persona non grata declaration. He added that some council members proposed minor changes before its approval.

The issue stemmed from Vice Ganda’s “jet ski holiday” segment in a recent concert with Regine Velasquez, where he referenced the viral “Jet2Holiday” meme and alluded to Duterte’s unfulfilled campaign vow to ride a jet ski to the West Philippine Sea. He also made a satirical remark about Duterte being detained at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands.

The joke drew sharp criticism from Duterte loyalists, some of whom called for Vice to be barred from Davao City, while others urged a boycott of brands he endorses.

Supporters of Vice Ganda, meanwhile, argued that the comedian was exercising artistic and political expression, with some describing the skit as “satire” and “harmless humor.”
