7 dead, 17 hurt as dump truck overturns in Silay

SEVEN people were killed and 17 others were injured after a mini dump truck carrying barangay health workers overturned in Silay City, Negros Occidental on Wednesday morning.

According to Lt. Col. Mark Anthony Darroca, chief of the Silay City police, five victims were declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while two others died while undergoing treatment. Of the 24 passengers, 17 sustained injuries, with several reported in critical condition. 

Darroca said the incident occured in Brgy. Guimbalaon past 9 a.m. 

Witnesses said the truck swerved to the opposite lane in an apparent attempt to avoid plunging into a ravine and was instead steered toward the roadside embankment before it overturned.

The driver told authorities he lost control of the vehicle’s brakes while descending a steep slope.
