BATANGAS Governor and veteran actress Vilma Santos was deeply affected by the defeat of her son, television host Luis Manzano, in the 2025 midterm elections.
This was revealed by Luis’ wife, actress Jessy Mendiola, in a recent interview on the online talk show “Ogie Diaz Inspires,” which aired on Sunday, July 13.
According to Jessy, it was Vilma herself who encouraged Luis to try his hand at politics. “Si momskie din ‘yung nakiusap kay Luis na ‘Baka puwede try mo naman ibang world,’” she said. “Palagi din itong sinasabi ni momskie na ‘We are so blessed. Maganda rin na tumulong tayo sa iba.’”
Jessy added that Vilma draws strength from her son, especially during important moments. “No’ng Monday, oathtaking ni momskie, palagi niyang nililingon si Luis,” she recalled.
Luis ran for vice governor of Batangas but lost to a more seasoned political rival. His loss came as a surprise to many, given his popularity and family legacy.
Jessy said that despite the setback, Luis remains visible in Batangas and continues to engage with constituents. “Tinutupad lang niya ‘yung mga binitawan niyang salita noong kampanya,” she said.
She also clarified that there are no plans yet for Luis to make another political bid in 2028. “Wala pa sa hinagap namin,” she said when asked about the possibility.
For now, Jessy said their family is focusing on moving forward and continuing to serve in whatever way they can, inside or outside public office.
