Sotto: Senate to act ‘forthwith’ on any impeachment case

SENATE President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III on Tuesday assured the public that he would act promptly on any impeachment case transmitted to the Senate under his leadership.

But he initially declined to speculate on how the possible filing of impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte could affect the country’s economy and political stability, saying such concerns were premature.

“That’s putting the cart before the horse,” Sotto said in a message to reporters.

“Is there an impeachment? Will these complaints even pass in the House of Representatives?”

Earlier, Senior House Deputy Minority Leader Rep. Edgar Erice disclosed that an impeachment move against President Marcos was being considered over alleged budget insertions by Cabinet members and congressional allies, as well as the passage of what he described as corruption-tainted budget laws from 2023 to 2025.

Meanwhile, another impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte is expected to be filed in the House of Representatives once the one-year ban on filing such cases lapses on Feb. 6.

Despite these developments, Sotto stressed that it is too early for the Senate to make preparations.

Still, he emphasized that he would act swiftly should any articles of impeachment reach his office.

“One thing is certain—whatever articles reach my office, I will immediately refer them to the Rules Committee,” Sotto said.

His remarks come amid criticism of the Senate’s previous handling of the impeachment case against Duterte, which was later archived by a majority vote.
