HOUSE Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos backed calls for a third-party investigation into alleged anomalies in flood control projects, saying Congress cannot probe an issue involving its own members.
“I actually agree… Why would a body investigate itself? I think it would be wise and prudent for us to wait as to what the executive has to say, and what their actions are with regards to the president’s speech in the SONA,” Marcos told reporters Wednesday.
He stressed that while the House should assist in identifying irregularities, “it will be primarily the prerogative of the executive to be able to identify where these anomalies lie, given the fact that… the accused so to speak is within the legislature.”
When asked if House hearings on the matter would be a waste of time, Marcos replied, “I don’t know. We’ll have to see… The House can assist in many, many other ways.” He pointed to waste management issues in Metro Manila as another cause of flooding that Congress could address.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier released a list of contractors linked to over 2,000 of 10,000 flood control projects, prompting scrutiny of possible lawmaker ties.
