Political analyst on new VP Sara impeachment: Slimmer chance to succeed

POLITICAL analyst and former Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs Ronald Llamas weighed in on the proposed new impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.

In the latest episode of “Morning Matters” on Monday, January 12, Llamas said the likelihood of the impeachment succeeding is low.

“Now in 2026, even if an impeachment complaint is filed against the Vice President, the chances of it succeeding are slimmer than last year because 2028 is approaching, and Vice President Sara is a front-runner in the surveys,” Llamas explained.

He added that criticisms against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. have intensified following the recent massive public works scandal, while attacks on Vice President Sara have been comparatively fewer.

“Also, the President’s approval rating is significantly lower than the Vice President’s,” Llamas noted.

Despite this, Llamas emphasized that Marcos still wields broad political influence, making the Vice President a more likely focus of opposition efforts than the President himself.

The impeachment plans follow recent remarks by Senator Imee Marcos, who announced that a new complaint against Duterte may be filed before or on February 6, 2026.

Meanwhile, Sara Duterte’s brother, Davao City First District Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, called on fellow lawmakers not to use Congress as a venue to advance decisions that have long been orchestrated behind closed doors, urging transparency for the public.
