Lino Cayetano to brother Alan: ‘Real change should start with us’

IF real change in government is the goal, it should begin with the Cayetano family.

This was the challenge issued by former Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano after he expressed support for the proposal of his brother, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, for all elected government officials—from the President down to lawmakers—to resign and hold a snap election to rebuild public trust in government.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Lino said he supports his brother’s idea but insisted that their family should lead by example.

“I support this proposal. I agree with my brother Alan and ask that we start with ourselves. Give up power. And this movement for real transformation will be a legacy our father will be truly proud of,” he wrote.

He added that both the Senate and Taguig City would continue to function even without the Cayetanos, noting that the city’s vice mayor is capable of continuing the leadership after 15 years of their family’s service.

“I will support further that no Cayetano should run in 2028. Lahat tayo,” he said.

Lino urged veteran politicians to voluntarily step aside and make way for a new generation of leaders.

“If you truly believe what you say, then trust and have faith that if some of the old guard step down now, it will inspire others to follow,” he added.

He clarified that his statement was not a “gimmick” nor linked to any political rift in the Senate, but a sincere response to the people’s growing frustration and demand for genuine change.

“We need to show sincerity. Let go of power—then people will believe,” he said.

According to Lino, the next generation is ready and capable, citing the private sector, academia, media, and youth as forces for transformation.

He ended his post with a direct appeal to his brother:

“Be that one, Sen. Alan, and you will be remembered by all sides as someone who laid the groundwork for real change.”
