Is a Senate shake-up looming? Gatchalian backs Sotto

AMID rumblings of another potential power shift in the Senate, Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian has thrown his full support behind Senate President Tito Sotto III, insisting that the chamber’s leadership remains “very stable.”

Speculation of a looming change in leadership surfaced after Senator JV Ejercito revealed that he and four other senators were mulling over a possible exit from the majority bloc, following allegations linking several incumbent and former senators to questionable flood control projects under Senate investigation.

“First of all, I see that Senator Sotto’s leadership is stable,” Gatchalian said in Filipino during a DWIZ interview on Saturday.

“In fact, it was from him that the suggestion came — ‘Let’s amend on the floor to make everything transparent.’”

Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Finance, highlighted that Sotto had agreed to key reforms in budget deliberations — including a three-day review period between the second and third readings of the national budget to ensure transparency.

“For me, the leadership of the Senate President is very stable,” he reiterated, stressing his intent to remain with Sotto’s camp.

Gatchalian said his focus remains on finalizing the 2026 national budget and aiding victims of the Cebu earthquake and recent cyclone, rather than engaging in political maneuvering.
