INIHAYAG ni Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri napagkasunduang mag-angkat ng 150,000 metriko toneladang asukal matapos ang ipinatawag na pulong ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos sa Malacanang kagabi.
“We however acknowledged the need to import a smaller amount for the industrial and household consumers, as the consensus using available data on the remaining demand was to import at only 150,000 MT,” sabi ni Zubiri.
Kasama sa mga dumalo sa pagpupulong kagabi ay ang mga stakeholders mula sa sektor ng magsasaka, millers, sugar workers at refiners.
“First of all, we thanked the President for not allowing too much importation of sugar to the country that would have affected hundreds of thousands of local farmers and farm workers all over the country,” dagdag ni Zubiri.
Aniya, mas mababa ito kumpara sa naunang inaprubahan ng Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) na mag-angkat ng 300,000MT ng asukal.
Kabilang sa mga dumalo ay sina Negros Occidental Vice Gov Jeffrey Ferrer at Lance Gokongwei ng Universal Robina Corp.
