Ex-Speaker Romualdez as state witness? It’s up to DOJ

MALACANANG on Tuesday said it’s up to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to decide whether former Speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez — yes, that Martin Romualdez — could possibly turn into a state witness in the multibillion-peso flood control scandal.

When asked if Romualdez might be granted immunity in exchange for his “valuable testimony,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said it would all depend on what he’s willing — or able — to reveal.

“Depende po sa kaniyang magiging salaysay at kung ano po ang kaniyang mailalahad,” Castro said, adding that only the DOJ can recommend if he qualifies as a state witness.

In short: it’s all still “too early to tell.”

Romualdez, who faced the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) on Monday, promised full cooperation in unearthing irregularities in the very projects he’s been accused of having a hand in.

Because, of course, who better to help investigate the scandal — than someone already linked to it?
