Chiz, Sotto seek Duterte block backing for Senate presidency

SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Senator-elect Tito Sotto have both sought support from the Duterte bloc in their respective bids for the Senate presidency, according to Senator-elect Bong Go.

“Yes, from our group,” Go confirmed Wednesday when asked if the two had approached them for support.

“Many others are also reaching out. We’re open to all discussions. Our criteria: prioritize the nation’s interest, the welfare of every Filipino, and ensure an independent Senate,” Go added.

Aside from Go, the Duterte bloc includes reelected Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, Robin Padilla, Imee Marcos, and Senator-elect Rodante Marcoleta.

Go said they haven’t decided whom to support—or if they will endorse one of their own.

“That’s still being discussed,” he said, adding that they will push for one candidate.

The number one senator elected last May 12 also clarified that they are not choosing a Senate President based on loyalty to Vice President Sara Duterte who is now facing an impeachment trial at the Senate.
