IPINAG-UTOS ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos ang pagbuo ng advisory board para masolusyunan ang mga isyu na kinakaharap ng mga Pinoy seafarer sa Europa.
Ginawa ni Marcos ang direktiba matapos ang pakikipagpulong sa mga international maritime employers at iba’t ibang may-ari ng barko sa Brussels, Belgium.
Tiniyak ni Marcos sa mga transport officials ng European Union na ginagawa na ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas ang mg hakbang para masolusyunan ang mga isyu hinggil sa sertipikasyon ng mga seafarers para makasunod sila sa Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention.
“Our seafarers are of great importance to the Philippines in many, many ways. Although we recognize that in the last many years, the Philippines has done very well in terms of being the leading seafarers around the world, however, with the changing situation after the pandemic, with the changing situation especially when we talk about supply line problems, all of these areas have to be revisited,” sabi ni Marcos.
Tinatayang aabot 50,000 Pinoy seafarer na nagtatrabaho sa mga barko sa Europa na posibleng mawalan ng trabaho dahil sa kabiguan ng Pilipinas na makapasa sa evaluation ng EMSA sa loob ng 16 taon.
Base sa pag-aaral ng United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) nananatili ang Pilipinas sa top provider ng seafarer.
Noong 2021, umabot ng $6.54 bilyon ang remittance ng mga Pinoy seafarers mula sa $6.353 bilyon noong 2020.
