SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Friday renewed his call to ban firecrackers, citing the growing prevalence of online sales and the risks they pose to public safety.
“With the increasing shift to online shopping, it’s crucial to legislate a ban on the sale and distribution of firecrackers to prevent potential safety hazards,” Gatchalian said in a press release.
His statement comes amid reports of rising online transactions for oversized and dangerous “killer” firecrackers.
He urged government agencies, online platforms, and local communities to collaborate in enforcing a ban and promoting safer alternatives for celebrations.
In 2022, Gatchalian filed Senate Bill No. 1144 to amend Republic Act 7183, renaming it the Firecrackers Prohibition Act.
The proposed legislation seeks to outlaw the sale, distribution, possession, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics, except for professional displays requiring permits from the Philippine National Police Fire and Explosives Office.
He argued that Executive Order No. 28, which regulates firecracker use, has failed to eliminate injuries. He stressed that celebrations don’t require fireworks, which often lead to accidents.
“Let’s prioritize safety over tradition and prevent unnecessary tragedies,” he said. The bill aims to ensure only trained professionals handle fireworks under strict regulations.
