DSWD eyes ‘Manhole Girl’ as ambassador for street rescue efforts

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is considering tapping the woman who recently went viral for emerging from a manhole in Makati as an ambassador for the agency’s street rescue programs.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian said the agency is open to working with the woman, identified only as “Rose,” to help spread awareness about the government’s efforts to assist individuals living on the streets.

“Siguro puwede natin siyang gamiting ambassador para maipaliwanag na walang masamang mangyayari kapag sumama sa amin kundi tulong lang,” Gatchalian said in a media interview.

The woman was seen crawling out of a manhole at the corner of Rufino and Adelantado sts. in Legazpi Village. The footage, widely shared online, earned her the nickname “Imburnal Girl” and sparked both public curiosity and concern.

According to Gatchalian, many homeless individuals remain reluctant to accept help from government agencies. The DSWD hopes Rose’s story will help bridge that gap.

“Nahihirapan kaming mangumbinsi minsan kaya nga ang gagawin nating bagong strategy ngayon, gagamitin natin ang mga tulad ni Rose na nakaranas na ng tulong ng gobyerno na kumbinsihin ang ilan nilang kaibigan na nasa gano’ng sitwasyon,” he said.
