Pasig candidate has 5 days to answer DQ case over ‘single mother’ joke

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) Second Division has ordered Pasig congressional candidate Christian Sia to respond within five days to a petition seeking his disqualification in the upcoming May 12 elections, following his controversial remarks about single mothers.

In a two-page summons, the Comelec said Sia must submit a verified answer either personally or via e-mail.

“Failure to file a verified Answer cum Memorandum within the reglementary period shall bar the Respondent from submitting controverting evidence,” the division warned.

The summons also emphasized that motions to dismiss, replies, rejoinders, and similar pleadings are not allowed.

However, the grounds for a motion to dismiss may still be raised as affirmative defenses.

The case will be deemed submitted for resolution upon receipt of Sia’s answer or once the five-day deadline lapses — whichever comes first.

The disqualification petition stemmed from a joke Sia made during a campaign sortie on April 3, where he crudely remarked about sleeping with single mothers who are “still menstruating” if he wins.

The comment sparked backlash from women’s groups, netizens, and election watchdogs.
