Falling concrete from Skyway injures 2 in Parañaque

A STUDENT and a driver were injured after their SUV was struck by falling concrete from the Skyway along MIA Road in Brgy. Tambo, Parañaque City on Wednesday, June 11.

Both victims sustained head injuries and were brought to a nearby hospital. Barangay responders were first on the scene and administered first aid to the student.

Photos taken by HynKing ng Sarangani and posted on Facebook showed the SUV’s windshield shattered, with damage also seen on the hood and roof. The concrete was believed to have fallen from a beam section of the expressway.

Witnesses from a nearby establishment reported hearing a loud thud.

“Yung kotse po nakita po namin nalaglagan na po ng semento… yung driver po, naano po ‘yung ulo niya. Parang na-trauma po siya,” one witness said.

Following the incident, personnel from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway (NAIAX) and the Skyway’s operator, Skyway O&M Corporation, inspected the affected area.

In a statement, Skyway O&M said it is coordinating with local authorities and the family of the injured student. The company described the incident as isolated and rare.

Its maintenance team has since conducted a full inspection of the NAIAX carriageway to ensure the safety of motorists.

“The company is taking the incident seriously and remains committed to ensuring public safety,” Skyway O&M said.

The elevated Skyway system connects the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).
