4 nabbed for theft of WWII monument markers

AT least four individuals were arrested for allegedly stealing brass markers from a World War II monument in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

The suspects were apprehended through the joint efforts of local police and barangay officials, according to Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon.

The brass plaques were part of a monument honoring Filipino guerillas who fought during World War II. The structure is located at the plaza of Alabang and serves as the centerpiece for annual commemorations held every February 4.

Biazon said the suspects were taken to the Philippine National Police (PNP) substation at Alabang Junction for investigation.

During questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted to selling the stolen brass markers to a junk shop. The owner of the shop will also be charged for violating the Anti-Fencing Law, Biazon added.

However, authorities fear the brass markers may have already been melted down and may no longer be recoverable.

Earlier, the city government offered a P100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those behind the theft.
