Veteran journalist, ex-Kalibo mayor Johnny Dayang gunned down at home

VETERAN journalist and former Kalibo, Aklan mayor Johnny Dayang was shot and killed by still unidentified assailants inside his home in Barangay Andagaw on Tuesday evening, April 29. He was 89.

Police confirmed that Dayang was watching television when he was shot from outside his residence by a gunman. He was rushed to the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Investigators from the Kalibo Municipal Police Station recovered three empty shells from the crime scene.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the attack.

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) condemned the killing, with Executive Director Usec. Jose Torres Jr. vowing swift action.

“We are closely coordinating with all concerned agencies to ensure the immediate resolution of this case,” Torres said in a statement posted on PTFOMS’ official Facebook page.

Dayang was a respected figure in both media and politics. He once served as president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), and was a mayor of Kalibo town from 1986 to 1987.
