Taal Lake fish safe to eat, insists BFAR. But would you?

THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has assured the public that fish caught from Taal Lake remain safe for consumption, amid allegations that the lake was used as a dumping site for missing cockfighting enthusiasts.

BFAR-Calabarzon Regional Director Sammy Malvas explained that tawilis, a freshwater sardine species endemic to the lake, only feeds on plankton and stays in shallow areas, making it unlikely to ingest any decomposing matter.

“Tilapia and bangus come from fish pens and are fed commercial feeds, while maliputo feeds only on smaller fish and not on decaying organisms,” Malvas added.

He also urged the public not to believe misinformation about the safety of fish harvested from the lake.

BFAR-Calabarzon said it has intensified its campaign against false claims regarding the quality and safety of fish from Taal Lake.
