THE Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) is investigating Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo over allegations thaf she may be a Chinese asset who has infiltrated the government by winning the local post in 2022.
“Yes, I created a special team of solicitors last week to look into the matter and determine if there is good reason to believe that the subject is unlawfully holding or exercising a public office,” Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra said.
Guevarra said the OSG is currently gathering relevant information from the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Bureau of Immigration, and other government agencies.
Guo faced the Senate last week to answer allegations that she was backing a POGO operation in Bamban that was raided last March, where authorities found evidence of human trafficking, serious illegal detention, physical abuse, and even torture.
Earlier, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. openly questioned how Guo was elected to her position.
In a media interview in Cagayan de Oro City, the President expressed his familiarity with the politicians in Tarlac, noting that even them are unfamiliar with the lady mayor.
He also raised concerns about the origins of Guo’s victory in the 2022 local elections.
While addressing the issue, President Marcos did not disregard the possibility that such occurrences could pose a security threat.
Consequently, he assured that the government would remain vigilant to prevent the entry of dubious personalities into the country.
The President’s remarks come amid an ongoing investigation into Mayor Guo’s election and her subsequent actions in office. The inquiry aims to shed light on any irregularities and ensure accountability in local governance.
Guo has yet to respond to President Marcos’s comments or address the concerns raised regarding her election.
However, her office released a statement affirming cooperation with the investigation and asserting her commitment to transparency and good governance. (GP)
