SAN Miguel Corporation (SMC) chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang visited Cebu this week to oversee ongoing relief efforts for communities affected by Typhoon Tino, committing additional assistance in the coming weeks.
Ang’s visit follows the deployment of SMC employee-volunteers who distributed thousands of food packs across the province last week. He joined another round of distributions in Barangay Subangdaku, one of the communities near SMC’s facilities.
He encouraged more employees to participate in the next wave of relief work, scheduled for December, saying the aim is to reach families still struggling nearly a month after the typhoon.
Ang’s trip coincided with the government’s launch of “Oplan Kontra Baha: Metro Cebu,” an anti-flood initiative led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Cabinet officials, with support from the private sector.
SMC’s participation will draw from its ongoing Better Rivers PH program, which has removed millions of tons of silt and waste from waterways in Luzon over the past five years. Under the new plan, SMC will deploy heavy equipment and personnel to clean eight waterways across Cebu City, Mandaue, Talisay, Liloan and Consolacion.
Ang said the company will use the same large-scale approach it applied in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga and Laguna to help restore river depth and reduce flooding, noting that the work will be undertaken at no cost to the government.
