WITH travelers long complaining about congestion at Caticlan Airport, the public greeted San Miguel Corp.’s (SMC) plan to build a new passenger terminal with relief and praise.
SMC president and CEO Ramon S. Ang said the passenger terminal building (PTB) would be completed before the end of 2027, just in time for President Marcos to witness its opening.
The project will be undertaken by Trans Aire Development Holdings Corp., an SMC subsidiary that operates the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, commonly known as the Caticlan Airport.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the groundbreaking is expected by early July. He has urged SMC to fast-track the improvements to ease congestion and revive tourist interest in Boracay, which saw a slight dip in arrivals last year.
The announcement quickly went viral online, with social media users expressing excitement and relief. Many had long complained about the cramped conditions and lack of modern facilities at the current terminal.
“After years of neglect, it’s about time!” one netizen wrote. “We hope this won’t end up like other ‘upgrades’ that look like oversized chicken sheds.”
Others lauded the Marcos administration and SMC for prioritizing tourism infrastructure. “Good job, Sec. Dizon and SMC! More tourists for Aklan and the Philippines!” another comment read.
Several users pointed out the timing of the project, saying it was crucial to improving Boracay’s image as an international destination. “This should’ve been a priority long ago. Tourists deserve better, and this is a step forward.”
The Caticlan Airport, located in the municipality of Malay in Aklan, serves as the primary gateway for travelers bound for Boracay.
