Permit needed for ‘Simbang Gabi’ outside churches

THE Archdiocese of Manila has reminded private companies planning to hold Simbang Gabi (Dawn Masses) outside churches this Christmas season to secure explicit permission from Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula.

According to Circular 2024-84, institutions wishing to host Masses in places like malls, schools, or offices must request approval from the archbishop.

“Our Archdiocesan policy provides that if Simbang Gabi Masses are to be celebrated in chapels, offices, or places other than the parish church, shrine, or chaplaincy, explicit permission from the Archbishop of Manila has to be sought,” the circular stated.

The archdiocese also outlined Mass schedules: evening Simbang Gabi can start as early as 7 p.m., with dawn Masses beginning at 5:30 a.m. On Christmas Eve, the Vigil Mass may begin at 6 p.m., while the dawn Mass on Christmas Day is held early in the morning.

Cardinal Advincula encouraged parish priests to motivate parishioners to join Simbang Gabi, starting December 16, as a way to foster meaningful family prayer during Advent and Christmas.
