A Quezon City court has convicted a mall security guard for killing a puppy by throwing it from a footbridge, sentencing him to imprisonment, a fine, and payment of damages, according to the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) on Friday.
The Metropolitan Trial Court of Quezon City found the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt for violating the Animal Welfare Act in connection with the death of a puppy named Browny in July 2023.
In its ruling, the court sentenced the guard to one year, six months, and one day as minimum, to two years of imprisonment as maximum, and ordered him to pay a P100,000 fine.
If unable to pay, the court said subsidiary imprisonment would be imposed in lieu of the fine.
The court also held the accused civilly liable, ordering him to pay PHP20,000 in moral damages to Browny’s owner, with six percent annual interest from the finality of the judgment until fully paid.
AKF, which pursued the criminal case, said the ruling honors the life of the animal and sends a strong warning that cruelty against animals carries legal consequences.
