SENATOR Grace Poe underscored the importance of developing artificial intelligence (AI) systems that are ethical, inclusive, and forward-thinking, stressing the urgent need for proper governance as AI continues to transform industries, economies, and everyday life.
In a news release, Poe cautioned against rushing AI-related legislation, advocating for thoughtful deliberation on pending measures in the Senate.
“It’s very important that we don’t just rush and pass a law without proper consultation,” she said. Poe emphasized that while AI should not be overly restricted, it does require a degree of regulation.
“AI definitely needs some regulation. We know it can be used to impersonate people and scam them. At the same time, it plays a critical role in research and in improving many aspects of our lives,” she added.
The government has acknowledged the rapid evolution of AI and its role in driving economic growth. Among its initiatives, it has tasked the Department of Trade and Industry with helping micro, small, and medium enterprises leverage AI to strengthen the sector.
