PNP honors Capt. Deiparine: A life of service, courage, devotion

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) paid its final tribute to Police Captain Joel Deiparine of the CIDG Regional Field Unit 7, who was killed in an ambush while performing his duty in Barangay Sudlon 2, Cebu City.

Acting PNP Chief, Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., led the police force in honoring Deiparine, describing him as a man of courage, integrity, and unwavering devotion to service—qualities that embody the true spirit of the PNP.

Nartatez paid his respects to the fallen officer on Oct. 31. He was accompanied by other senior police officials.

During the visit, Nartatez expressed condolences to the bereaved family and conveyed the organization’s gratitude for Deiparine’s loyal and selfless service.

In a gesture of empathy, he turned over financial assistance to the Deiparine family, reaffirming the PNP’s commitment to support its personnel and their loved ones both in life and in loss.

“Captain Deiparine was a police officer who served with heart, courage, and commitment — a true reflection of the ideals that define the Philippine National Police,” Nartatez said in a statement.

Deiparine, who served as Assistant Chief of Intelligence at CIDG RFU 7, was conducting a surveillance operation on October 25 when he and his companion, former Master Sergeant Artchel Tero, were ambushed by unidentified gunmen in Sitio Balaw, Barangay Sudlon 2.

The officer was fatally shot, while Tero sustained minor injuries.

Under Nartatez’s directive, the PNP immediately offered a ₱500,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the suspects.

Just four days later, on October 29, Leonardo “Jun” Manto Jr., one of the alleged assailants, surrendered to authorities in Pasig City.

Nartatez confirmed that Manto admitted his involvement in the ambush during a radio interview, saying he “felt the pressure” of the nationwide manhunt.

He is now in police custody and will be transferred to Cebu to face charges.
